Imagine growing food for half the world to eat but not making enough money to be able to feed yourself and your family.
This is a reality that many farmers abroad face every day.
You have the power to change this.
As a Compton Champion, your main priority is to raise funds to help us as a hospice continue to provide the services that we do to our patients, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t help other good causes at the same time too. February 29th 2016 is not only Leap Day, but it also hails the start of Fairtrade Fortnight – a two week initiative to get people learning about and buying Fairtrade Products to help people across the world survive.
The Fairtrade movement began in 1992 and was founded by CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Tradecraft, Global Justice Now and The National Federation of Women’s Institutes. The foundation describes itself as a movement for change, working directly with businesses, consumers and campaigners to make trade fair for farmers and workers across the globe. They strive for better prices for produce, better working conditions and better terms of trade. Fairtrade aims to develop farming communities, giving them control over their own futures.
To date there are now 1,210 Fairtrade certified organisations in 74 countries helping over 1.5 million workers to live better lives.
So how can you help? Well it’s easy! Just look for the Fairtrade label on any produce that you buy. Why not hold a coffee morning with Fairtrade Coffee? Or raffle off a hamper of Fairtrade products? You could even hand out Fairtrade banana’s at a sporting event. The possibilities are endless.
All Fairtrade produce that you buy helps the producer who grew it earn a fairer wage and a more secure future. What’s not to love?!
